Hairology- how to talk to your Hairstylist

Texture this, and slice that. Thin here, and blunt there. Ever wonder what is the difference between layers and texture? slicing and point cutting? and heaven knows what melting, ombre, and baylage are.
Here is a list of Hairology: the right words to tell your Hairstylist.

1. Layers
Sorry people, Layers aren't cut horizontal. You CAN NOT ask for 3 Layers in your hair, or you will look like this
So, when we talk about Layers, there are plenty of different names for each type
A- Chunky layers, Textured Layers,  Defined layers, Distinct Layers.
B-Soft layers, Ghost layers, blended layers.
Each of these types can either be short or long, SHORT layers, are going farther away from the length. LONG layers are staying near the length of the hair.

2. Texturizing
Does the Sound of THINNING scare you? Do you hate thinning shears, but love texturizing shears? Guess what? they're the same thing. Yes there is different amounts of teeth on the shear, but they both do the same thing, They take out bulk to give a wispier, more textured look. If your Hairstylist knows what she is doing, then TEXTURE is great! thinning out the hair doesn't have to be scary. But do realize they are in fact the same thing. Texturizing, is great for bobs, a-lines, and pixie cuts, also if you love framing around the face.

3. The Razor
Ok lets get real, sometimes you want to just mix up your haircut so the razor sounds fun and on the edge. 1- Ask your stylist if she/he feels comfortable with razor cuts. If she/he hesitates, STOP! don't let them touch your hair! Razor's are my favorite tool! but they do have to be used properly or you end up with a hack job. Also, some Hairystlists get what I call "Razor Crazy". They cut everyone and anyones hair with the razor. Well if you are a curly haired person, jump out of that chair or you will turn into a frizzy mess!

4. Slicing
It's a way of adding layers and texture to the hair.

5. Fringe
Fringe is the correct term for Bangs. Would you like Fringe around the face? If you say yes, then you're adding bangs.

6. Frame the Face
Framing the face, is cutting the hair around the face to curve in towards your face. If you have a really round or square face, I don't usually suggest doing this, it's just going to emphasis your round and squareness.

7. Soften the Ends
Ever get a haircut and it's okay but then about 3 weeks you absolutely love it? it's because your hair naturally will soften the ends, with heat, brushing, washing, it happens naturally. Well in my opinion, why only love your hair for 3 weeks when you could love it for all 6 weeks? Before you get your haircut, make sure your stylist knows how to soften the Ends

8. Point Cut
Point Cutting is a way of cutting that instead of cutting a blunt line, it gives a "piecey" look.

9. Dusting
Cutting the most minimal amount of hair as possible. But to get the desired length you want, give it to your stylist in inches 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, or an inch. are all very reasonable amounts.

10. Ombre
Ombre is GRADUALLY going from dark on the roots to light on the ends. another word for this is MELTING

11. Baylage
Some people assume the Baylage is the same. it is not, baylage is giving a "natural" highlight throughout the hair, it gives more of a sunkissed look.

Hope this helps your hair journey!
